Golf tournament to raise money for families of deceased Rich's employees

The staff at Rich Products is a close-knit family.

After losing two of their colleagues in a car accident on the Niagara Parkway last month, a committee has been formed to organize a golf tournament in their name, raising money for their families.

Don Carty and Laura Kostuk met with the Fort Erie Times this week to raise awareness about the tournament on July 29, that will remember Carlos Mejia and Joe Holiko, who were travelling together, when the vehicle they were in entered the Niagara River.

Carty said holding the golf event to raise funds for their families, in such a tough time, was something the staff at the local plant felt was more than necessary.

"It has to be so rough, I don't know how they're coping," said Carty, who pointed out that Mejia's father Jorge is also employed at Rich's.

Holiko had four children at home aged 7, 9, 12 and 16 and was the type of colleague that made friends with everyone that crossed his path.

"There are close knit groups, but Joe was friends with everybody," said Kostuk.

Donations and prizes, along with registrations will be accepted until about July 15.

Cost for golf and dinner is $60 and just dinner after golf is $25. There will be a silent auction, a penny sale and much more.

Anyone interested in participating or helping the cause can call Carty at (905) 871-6444 or Kostuk at (289) 303 8829.

The phone number to the plant is ((05) 871-2605.
