Fighting Irish seeking to offset travel costs for tournament in Edmonton

By Bernd Franke, The Tribune

Notre Dame College School's senior boys basketball team is hosting an elimination draw to offset costs of competing at a tournament in Edmonton.

Friday night's fundraising event at Club Castropignano features an open bar and all-you-can eat dinner.

Tickets are $75 each, and top prize is a flat-screen TV. Also awarded will be three cash prizes: $1,000, $350 and $150.

There will be a separate raffle for items on a prize table.

Call head coach Mark Gallagher or assistant coach Chris Biggar at the school – 905-788-3060 – to order tickets.

Teams from as far east as Florida and Nova Scotia and as far south as California and Texas have been invited to compete at the 35th REB Invitational taking place Dec. 15-17 at Jasper Place High School in Edmonton.

Gallagher described the tournament as “one of the top amateur events in North America.”

“The coaching staff views this as an unbelievable opportunity for our players to gain valuable experience against high-level international competition, while taking part in a first-class event,” Gallagher said.

At past tournaments a main gym boasting a capacity of 2,000 spectators has sold out for games, as well as for opening ceremonies that have featured live entertainment and a dunk contest.

Tournament games are broadcast on local TV and radio in Edmonton, and every game will be live-streamed online at www.REBinvitational.com
