Thursday's game between the Welland Junior Canadians and the Blackhawks ended in a 4-2 loss for Thorold.
Ryan Miotto scored for Welland 38 seconds into the game, Griffin Roubos evened out the score four minutes later.
At 8:28, Thomas McLatchie scored another goal for Welland, putting them ahead of Thorold again.
Ryan Smith’s goal during the second period put Thorold back into the game, but the euphoria wasn’t long-lived. Welland’s Ryan Donovan put another past Matthew Blattenberger and put the Junior Canadians in the lead again.
Thorold’s game was strong all throughout the third period, but it wasn’t enough.
The call by the coaches to pull the goalie during the last minutes of the game backfired when Thomas McLatchie got possession of the puck and scored a goal on an empty net.
Smith, who describes himself as a hard-working player, hopes his game will improve by playing for the Blackhawks.
The 17-year-old is in his first season playing with the Thorold Blackhawks, but he has been playing hockey for almost as long as he can walk.
He has come a long way from the early days, playing with the Trenton Golden Hawks last season and being selected by the Niagara IceDogs during the 5th round.
In playing for the Blackhawks, he’s hoping to get some valuable ice time and help the team win.
Smith, while also playing baseball and tennis, said hockey is definitely his passion.
“You want to take it as far as you can and stay in it for as long as you can. I’d love to play professional somewhere, the NHL or overseas, that is obviously the goal.”
